Lo Tsen: The Sublimation of Mercy by Lu Yi-Chung, 2009
Lo Tsen has worked as an artist for many years now. With a sincere heart and steely determination, she has remained true to her original creative beginnings and in the winter of 2009 presents a new and impassioned exhibition at Angel Art Gallery in Taipei.
Lo’s works do not make use of resplendent techniques or intricate and obscure decorations. Having been an artist for over three decades she remains resolutely committed to the teachings of her inspirational teacher Wu Hao – everything comes from one’s own inner truth. In her own creative statement “Gradual - Rebirth” (冉冉 – 再生) Lo notes:
In recent years although my life has been remarkably stable I have unexpectedly found myself having to deal with a profound and often overwhelming sense of loss. Over the years the values and beliefs I have held since I was young have been constantly assailed by life. As such my long standing conviction that common pursuit of and adherence to the same beautiful values will help create a better tomorrow for all Mankind has been decisively undermined.
Lo Tsen is particularly concerned at the way in which Mankind’s pursuit of economic self interest and the way in which we have embraced rapid mass volume production and manufacturing is polluting the world in which we live, causing the spread of untold toxins and disasters. Lo is also interested in the subject of cultural heritage and how mechanization is leading to the gradual disappearance of handicraft arts. The artists’ works are imbued with multi-layered reflections on issues such as these that speak to the fundamental essence of human nature.
For Lo Tsen human happiness is cursory. She reflects on and constantly paints works that reference the anxieties that plague people. Ultimately, this deeply felt creative idea has breathed new life into the artist’s work as she has she opened up her representational language and played with the natural abstraction of emotion.
In recent works Lo has focused on the sensitivities of female love, hate, emotion and enmity, expressing them as wind and rain, with wild screaming and soft whispers. She happily gives voice to years of emotional pressure, truly experiencing the sense of perfection and completion that comes with artistic creation.
Lo Tsen’s recent graphic pieces of external conflict offer a classical consideration of form over substance, though on further exploration we still find the extension of space. This offers Lo the perfect opportunity to make use of Avant-garde thinking and the content of her art displays an elevation to the level of contemporary visual sensation. From focusing on a visual focal point to embracing spatial atmosphere she takes her first step into vulnerability.
Mercy is part of Lo Tsen’s basic emotional make up and sublimation another idea she holds dear. In the refined surroundings of Angel Art Gallery we await the reaction of the audience on experiencing the sublimation of mercy brought forth by the artist’s great courage and passion.
